In a conversation hosted by JK Strategies, Jack Kalavritinos (Class of 1985) interviews Bobby Burchfield (Class of 1976) on recent issues with free speech, notably on college campuses.
Kalavritinos is a former Health and Human Services director under the Trump administration who worked on policies such as helping healthcare providers and lowering the cost of pharmaceutical drugs.
Kalavritinos interviews Mr. Burchfield, a highly respected retired attorney who previously served as General Counsel to President George H.W. Bush’s re-election campaign, as well as an Ethics Advisor to President Trump.
In their 22-min discussion, Mr. Burchfield mainly discusses his class at the George Washington Law School, and how he values the importance of free speech and diversity of opinion in his classroom. Burchfield highlights how he selected readings across multiple viewpoints to foster diverse discussion in his class. Burchfield believes that through diverse discussion, students are able to challenge their opinions and grow.
Mr. Burchfield recently donated over $4.5 million to create a “First Amendment Chair” at George Washington Law. Mr. Burchfield previously argued notable cases on the Supreme Court, such as McConnell v. FEC (2003).
